This glorious husk of a tree stands starkly amongst its green leafed neighbours. Its needle-less branches, brightly reflecting the mid-morning sun on a beautiful September day. It made me think of lightning in a bottle. I found it at the end of my longest journey to date along the Dunk River Trail.
After some research, I believe the tree - possibly an Eastern Hemlock - was a casualty of the woolly adelgid, an invasive insect from Central Europe. The insects multiply profusely with one female laying about 40,000 eggs per year. The vast number of insects feeding on the tree, prevents it from growing new needles and limbs causing it to die after a few years.
In 2015 a Cornell entomologist started to test a new predator, Silver Flies, to combat the adelgids in New York. Progress. Hopefully.
