They were all packed and ready to go. No way to know when they would leave, where they were going, who was coming or what would happen when they arrived. They did know something though. They would be gone tomorrow.

I’m pretty sure this is “meadow salsify” (tragopogon pratensis) aka goat's-beard, meadow goat's-beard or jack-go-to-bed-at-noon. Go to bed at noon because the flowers only open in the morning and close up around noon.
