Enduring

It was a brilliantly clear and sunny day in late July and the family and I had taken a trip to the beach. It was quiet, the water was calm and I wandered along taking photos of the shoreline.

Driftwood delights me and when I came across this beautiful piece, resting on the beach, I could not have been happier to crawl around it in the hot sand. It was quite large and had obviously spent a great deal of time - perhaps decades - being smoothed by the water and bleached by the sun.

This gleaming city for tiny marine organisms was now in port, taking a break and drying off. I imagine its inhabitants enjoying this moment of stability, some taking the opportunity to get off while others bustle to get on before it leaves once again on its next unplanned voyage.
