Elegance

Great blue herons are large, elegant birds who enjoy fishing in shallow freshwater and saltwater environments. They have been known to live up to 24 years but on average live for about 15 years.

In 2004, a nesting colony on the Island had over 500 bird pairs but by 2018 that colony only had 165 nests remaining. The birds are considered native residents of the Island. Some will overwinter here but many migrate south.

This particular heron was fishing very close to the shoreline just past the harbour in Montague. I was stealing a few minutes for a quick walk along the boardwalk during a brief stop in Montague. We met for 3 short but memorable minutes.
