The MacKenzies Brook Sea Arch in September 2022 before its collapse in November 2022

The MacKenzies Brook Sea Arch

This morning I learned that Post Tropical Storm Nicole, which blew through yesterday and last night has finished-off what Fiona (and indeed many storms before it) had started. The MacKenzies Brook sea arch has become a sea stack or teacup.

To me, the arch was a grand monument to the awesome power of wind, water and time. Watching it crumble and transform into a new teacup only a few weeks after losing the teacup at Thunder Cove to Fiona, is a stunning reminder of just how dynamic a land Epekwitk / PEI really is.

Despite having visited the PEI National Park a number of times over the past few years, I only learned of the sea arch at MacKenzies Brook this past summer.

I had made several visits to the beaches at MacKenzies Brook and MacNeil's Brook - both beautiful spots - in an effort to capture the arch in some of its glory.

Here is one of my favourite photos I took from my last visit:

I captured this photo on my last visit at 5:44am, about an hour before sunrise on Saturday September 3, 2022. I call it “Peace Time”.

To my untrained eye, the arch in this photo looks strong and stable but during that same visit I took another photo which tells a different story, showing a large crack at the top of the arch:
